Commercial Photography in London. The Electric Barge

Blanc Creative – Commercial Photography, Video and Podcast Production

Cruising on the Electric Barge. Shooting Commercial Photography in London

From Paddington to Camden and everything in between.

Electric Barge London sits quietly on the Grand Union Canal at Paddington Central, right next to Sheldon Square.

It’s not just another boat on the water. It is a fully electric, skippered venue that offers something different from the usual London event spaces. It’s an incredible floating venue that you could simply miss as you stroll thge toll paths on a beautiful summer,er’s day, but recently, the uniqueness of this vessel, has been re-invented thanks to Outthought Agency in Norwich.

Alex Flatt, founder of OutThought, took to the helm, and led the entire branding project.

The project included Commercial Photography in London professional to not only promote the business, but to develop imagery that would be used to adorn the huge digital billboards that sat on the nearby high rise buildings around Paddington.

And for the professional imagery, Outthought chose us at Blanc Creative to handle their Commercial Photography in London.

We delivered extensive PR, Press images and Bespoke Stock Photography that show exactly what makes Electric Barge London stand out.

The project came about because Outthought Agency handles branding and marketing for several London-based clients, including Electric Barge London.

They needed images that would work across press releases, websites, social media and marketing campaigns. After reviewing several London photography teams, they selected us for our track record in commercial work for venues and hospitality businesses.

We were thrilled as usual. Whilst being based in Norwich, our client list spans the UK and much further afield.

We’ve worked with clients in Dubai, Zurich, Dublin, Wales and regularly travel to London and all corners of the UK.

Why do people choose Blanc Creative for Commercial Photography in London Projects?

Quite simply, because we specialise in commercial work and nothing else.

The Electric Barge London

For over thirteen years we’ve focused exclusively on shooting for brands, venues, hospitality businesses, events and marketing campaigns – never weddings, never personal portraits unless they serve a commercial purpose.

That narrow focus means every job sharpens the same set of skills: understanding what press images need to land in publications, how stock shots should be versatile enough for cropping and overlays, and how lifestyle sequences can show real experiences rather than posed perfection.

Clients across the UK – and occasionally abroad – choose us precisely because they don’t have to explain the fundamentals of commercial photography; we already live in that world.

The other big reason is our track record for handling projects in a calm, professional and efficient way, no matter where the job takes us.

Being based in Norwich doesn’t limit our reach – it actually helps. We arrive organised, adapt quickly to site conditions, communicate clearly from briefing through to delivery, and hand over structured, ready-to-use files without last-minute stress.

Whether it’s a canal venue in Paddington, a rooftop in Manchester or a brand activation further afield, we treat every assignment with the same straightforward process: thorough planning, minimal disruption on the day, and fast, organised turnaround.

Outthought Agency knew this approach would fit their workflow perfectly.

It allowed them to concentrate on strategy and messaging while we delivered a complete library of PR press and bespoke stock images that worked hard across every channel they needed.

Working on the The Electric Barge – Commercial Photography in London that captures the essence of your business every time.

The brief was clear: produce images that feel authentic, highlight the electric and sustainable side of the operation, and capture the everyday experience of cruising along the Regent’s Canal.

Before we talk about the shoot itself, it helps to understand the business we were photographing.

Electric Barge London is based at a permanent mooring on the canal in Paddington. F

rom there it runs scheduled return cruises and private hires. The main public option is the Camden Return Cruise, which lasts three and a half hours.

You leave Paddington, pass through Little Venice with its pretty Regency houses, go under the Maida Hill tunnel, and then enter Regent’s Park.

Guests get a rare close-up view of London Zoo – often spotting the African hunting dogs if the timing is right – before reaching Camden Market.

The boat turns around and heads back the same way.

What sets Electric Barge London apart is that it runs entirely on electric power. There are no diesel fumes or loud engines.

The boat glides along quietly, which makes conversations easy and keeps the focus on the surroundings. The crew – all fully trained skippers and staff – handle everything from navigation to bar service.

The barge itself is wheelchair accessible, with wide doors and level decks so that everyone can join in. Inside you find a club-level sound system, basic table and chair setup, and clean bathrooms.

The bar is fully stocked, and guests can choose from packaged drinks options.

Catering comes from local partners who supply everything from light bites to full meals.

The team chooses drinks and supplies with sustainability in mind, preferring local producers wherever possible. This fits the overall ethos.

Every booking on Electric Barge London supports the Floating Classroom, the educational charity that shares the same boat and base.

The Floating Classroom has been running since the early 2000s, building on the work of Beauchamp Lodge Settlement which started in 1938.

It takes school groups and families out onto the waterways to learn about London’s canals, history, science and nature. Profits from the commercial cruises go straight back into these programmes, so a birthday party or corporate away day on the barge also helps fund hands-on learning for children who might not otherwise get near the water.

This combination of fun events and real social purpose is what makes Electric Barge London special. Corporate groups book it for team away days or client meetings because the setting is relaxed yet professional.

Families choose it for anniversaries or celebrations because the views change constantly and the pace is gentle. Marketing teams use it for product launches and activations because the boat itself becomes part of the story – modern, green and distinctly London. The routes take in some of the capital’s best-known green spaces without any of the traffic or crowds you find on the streets above.

Now we shoot efficiently, we deliver great value for money. In fact, here’s another sales point. When we work in London, awe donlt add 50% on the price of the shoot. Our day rates are the same. We offer transparency, so we all know exactly what the brief is, and what you get for you money.

I mean, don’t you just hate it when you book a £20 flight on a budget airline, only to get hit with £50 tax, £30 luggage fees, a charge to book your seat and another tpo get your speedy boarding. £150 later, you wonder where that £20 flight has gone.

The London was shoot was nailed in one full day of shooting.

The first priority was PR press images. These needed to tell a story that journalists could drop straight into articles. We photographed the barge at its mooring with Paddington Basin in the background, showing the clean lines and the electric charging points discreetly.

We captured the crew at work – one skipper at the helm and the accommodating staff  – to illustrate the professional service.

Interior shots showed the layout clearly: seating arranged for groups of different sizes, the bar area ready for service, and the accessible ramp in use.

For the cruise sequences we joined two Camden Return trips. One in the afternoon with bright spring light, another in the early evening as the sun dropped. This gave us variety in mood.

We photographed guests enjoying the views from the open deck, families pointing out the zoo enclosure.

These images went into the PR pack to show the experience in action rather than just an empty boat.

The press shots also included wide landscape views that place Electric Barge London firmly in its London setting – the canal path, the bridges, the mix of modern apartment blocks and older warehouses.

Alongside the PR work we created a large library of bespoke stock images. These are different from the press set because they need to be versatile.

Outthought Agency wanted options that could be cropped for social media squares, used in website banners, or dropped into brochures without looking staged.

We shot empty areas of the deck at different times of day so that designers could overlay text easily.

We captured close-ups of drinks being served, plates of food arriving, and the reflections of London Zoo in the water. We took detail shots of the electric motor housing (tastefully framed) to reinforce the sustainable message. We also photographed the route itself – Little Venice at dawn, the Maida Hill tunnel entrance, Regent’s Park from water level – so that the stock library could support future campaigns about specific cruise highlights.

Shooting on water brings its own considerations. The light changes quickly as the boat moves under bridges and through tunnels.

Reflections on the water can be beautiful but also tricky to balance. We worked with natural light where possible, using reflectors and diffusers to keep the images clean and true to the electric, low-impact feel of the barge.

Because the vessel is accessible, we made sure our own kit and movement did not get in the way of any guests who were on board during the shoots. The Outthought Agency team joined us for part of the process, which helped us understand exactly how the images would fit into their wider branding work – colours, tone of voice, key messages about community and sustainability.

The collaboration with Outthought Agency in Norwich ran smoothly from start to finish. They are based in Norfolk but work with clients right across the UK, including several in London.

The Electric Barge London

Their approach is thoughtful and detail-oriented, which matched ours at Blanc Creative in London Commercial Photography. They supplied mood boards and brand guidelines early on, reviewed drafts of the image selects, and gave clear feedback on which shots best supported different marketing channels. This back-and-forth meant the final delivery included exactly what they needed: high-resolution files organised into folders for press use, website, social media and print. We also supplied a selection of black-and-white options for more editorial looks and a set of lifestyle images that could be licensed for third-party features.

High-quality photography matters for a business like Electric Barge because the product is an experience.

People cannot try it out in a shop window. They decide to book after seeing pictures online or reading a press story.

The images we produced show the scale of the space, the quality of the service and the uniqueness of the setting. They help potential customers picture themselves on the deck, drink in hand, watching London Zoo slide past.

For the Floating Classroom side, the photos also highlight the educational work, which helps attract school bookings and grant funding.

Since the images went live, Electric Barge London has seen increased enquiries for both private hires and ticketed cruises.

The PR shots have appeared in several London lifestyle publications, and the stock library now powers the website and social channels.

Outthought Agency has used the material across email campaigns and printed brochures. The project proved once again that specialist London commercial photography, done with local knowledge and attention to practical detail, delivers results for venue businesses.
